The Ugandan Bus Stop Dilemma

January 12, 2016 by Karsten 1 Comment

Imagine you get off a bus in rural Uganda. A guy walks up, takes the backpack you're carrying out of your hand, and proceeds to walk off towards a nearby building. Is he trying to steal from you? Is he trying to scam you? Is he trying to help you? I found myself in that very situation. Travel savvy people might immediately suspect a tourist tout. Before you jump to conclusions, keep in mind that I was a half day's journey away from where anyone could reasonably expect a tourist on a … [Read more...]

Thailand Money Matters: An In-Depth Guide for Expats

January 5, 2016 by Karsten 15 Comments

I remember opening my first bank account in Thailand. A kind, middle-aged bank teller handled the application. My secretary was along to help translate. Halfway through the process, the teller turned to my secretary and asked, "Does he have a girlfriend?" Maybe I was lucky that I didn't, because that account setup seemed to go a lot smoother than anticipated; however, not all my dealings with Thai banks went that well. From being unable to cash foreign currency checks to getting rejected … [Read more...]

That Time I Played a Single Video Game for 3,600 Hours

December 3, 2015 by Karsten 10 Comments

If you play a computer game for more than 40 hours a week on average, skip classes, and don't shower for up to two weeks - is that an addiction? That was pretty much me some 15 years ago. At the time I was playing 'Everquest'. Total time spent inside that virtual fantasy world of elves and dwarves? More than 3,600 hours. I don't know the exact number, but that's what I last remember seeing on the game. I don't plan on logging back in again just to check. At one point I quit. In the space of a … [Read more...]

October 21, 2015 by Karsten 1 Comment

What do entrepreneurs do all day? How do business owners and managers use their time to accomplish their goals? While I can't answer that on a representative basis, I can give you a pretty exact picture of what it is that I do all day long. Throughout the last two years I picked a number of weeks during which I assiduously kept track of every single thing I worked on. Here are the results. About Me I've been running a web-based business out of Bangkok, Thailand since 2006. At the time of … [Read more...]

Thai Health Insurance: Here’s What You Need to Know as an Expat

September 29, 2015 by Karsten 26 Comments

When I wrote about my cost of living in Bangkok a few weeks back, the most common question I received by e-mail was what health insurance I'm using. If that's all you want to know - that's easy. The company is called ACS. If you never heard of them, don't worry, neither had I until 3 days before signing up with them. However, those recommendations don't stay up to date for long. My insurance prior to ACS was a French insurance that shall remain unnamed. They were pretty awesome ... until they … [Read more...]
